JUDGE PUTS GAG ORDER ON TRUMP

On Tuesday, the judge overseeing Donald Trump's hush money case found him in criminal contempt due to several posts made on Truth Social that violated a gag order prohibiting attacks on jurors and witnesses. The judge warned Trump of potential jail time for further breaches.

Judge Juan Merchan ruled Trump in contempt for nine violations, each carrying a $1,000 fine. He cautioned against future violations and stated that imprisonment could be considered "if necessary and appropriate." Despite acknowledging that the fines were modest relative to Trump's wealth, limited by state law, Merchan noted the potential need for harsher penalties like jail time to ensure compliance.

The gag order prohibits Trump from making public statements about witnesses or jurors. Merchan emphasized the order's clarity and Trump's violations, instructing him to remove specified posts from his Truth Social account and campaign website promptly.

Regarding Trump's complaints about witnesses' public comments, Merchan hinted at modifying the gag order if necessary in the future.

Michael Cohen, an expected witness, commented that the small fine was inconsequential, highlighting the judge's stance on accountability.

Earlier, the defense's arguments failed to sway Merchan, who criticized their credibility and Trump's alleged cautiousness in complying with the gag order.

Prosecutors accused Trump of repeated violations, seeking maximum fines and post removal. They also requested a warning of potential jail time for future violations.

The prospect of imprisonment could become a focal point for Trump's campaign and supporters, as seen in previous fundraising efforts related to legal challenges. Despite legal arguments about post origins and intentions, Merchan considered reposts as endorsements by Trump, reflecting his intent to reach a wide audience and express approval.

Trump faces multiple charges related to falsifying business records concerning hush money payments, with a potential prison sentence of up to four years if convicted.
